One phrase that I see tossed around all the time in describing Lolita is “Lolita is a modest fashion,” by which the speaker means, “lolita clothing covers a good portion of the body.” That has always rubbed me the wrong way, and I thought I’d put down in words why I consider that description not only untrue, but actively harmful.
First of all, what does “modest” mean? It turns out that it means something very different depending on whether you’re a man or a woman. A “modestly dressed” man is wearing clothing that is simple, inexpensive, and not flashy (spoiler alert: not lolita.) A “modestly dressed” woman is covering up a lot of skin, “leaving something to the imagination,” etc. When it comes down to it, “modest” men are concealing their wealth or style. “Modest” women are concealing their bodies.
What makes me uncomfortable is the implication that the body is what a woman should be most proud of (and therefore modest about.) The concept of female “modesty” is slut-shamey and reductive, and to claim that a $300 bow-encrusted princess dress is modest is kind of laughable.
Lolita fashion is anything but modest; it screams “look at me,” and I don’t just mean bubblegum-explosion OTT coords. Even classic and toned-down looks are anachronistic - or just unusual – enough to attract extra attention. I love lolita, and it can be many things for many people… but let’s be real, folks. It isn’t modest (and that’s ok!)
Actually, when most people are talking about clothes, modesty means exactly the same thing for women, which is why I’ve always avoided calling Lolita clothes “modest” because it’s a very ostentatious fashion, often even at its simplest (obviously there are some coords that are the exceptions).
There are tons of sites out there aimed specifically at females who want to dress modestly (just google “modest clothing for women” and like a dozen online shops that explicitly call themselves that pop up), and they pretty much always define female modesty in clothes as “simple, inexpensive, and not flashy” as well.

Erevos Aether’s AW 2014-15 collection, Wake the Serpent Not, contrasts sheer, romantic, fragile textures with armorlike iridescent leather and metallic elements. The architectural qualities of this tough, invulnerable aspect combine with its softer side to create a high sci-fi look that is dark and impressive.
You would be correct.
